Sockeye salmon hatchery for Penticton

The Okanagan Nation Alliance will be celebrating the ground breaking for a new sockeye salmon hatchery Thursday morning. The hatchery, which has been seven years in the works is being partly funded by the Grant and Chelan Public Utility Districts in Washington State. Once complete next year, the facility will have the capacity to rear up to eight million sockeye salmon eggs to be released annually as fry into the Okanagan system. ONA Chair, Grand Chief Stewart Phillip says the project is not only a contribution to the Okanagan Nation, but a contribution to the economy of the region. The ground breaking ceremony will take place following the annual release of sockeye fry at 930 Thursday morning at Highway 97 and Green Mountain Road.

New top cop for Penticton

The City of Penticton has announced the hiring of a new Officer in Charge for the Penticton Detachment and South Okanagan Regional Command. Inspector Kevin Hewco will come to Penticton from the North Cowichan Detachment in Duncan. Hewco, who has been an RCMP member for 26 years will assume the rank of Superintendant. He is expected to make the move to the Okanagan this summer once housing arrangements are finalized.

Dan Ashton wins Penticton Riding

In the Penticton Riding, Penticton Mayor Dan Ashton was victorious in his for attempt at provincial politics defeating the NDP's Richard Cannings.

Ashton collected 10,489 votes compared to 9,225 for Cannings.

Sean Upshaw of the Conservatives and Doug Maxwell of the BC First Party finished a distant third and fourth respectively.

Ashton replaces a retired Bill Barisoff in Victoria... and his victory means there will have to be a by-election to fill the Mayor's chair in Penticton.

Larson wins in Boundary - Similkameen

One of the more intersesting ridings in the province to watch was Boundary - Similkameen, where former Oliver Mayor Linda Larson was victorious.

Larson collected 7,853 votes compared to 6,656 for the NDP's Sam Hancheroff.

John Kwasnica of the Green Party finished third in the riding followed by Independants Mischa Popoff and Doug Pederson.

Tagert wins in Fraser - Nicola

In the Fraser - Nicola Riding, NDP Incumbant Harry Lali was one of the sitting NDP MLA's to lose his seat.

He lost to the Liberals Jackie Tagert 5,539 votes to 4,785.

John Kidder of the Green Party was third, with Michael Beauclair of the Conservatives fourth.

It's another Liberal Majority in the BC Legislature... and a Liberal sweep in the South Okanagan Similkameen Ridings...

Dan Ashton has been delared the winner in the Penticton Riding defeating Richard Cannings of the NDP.

Linda Larson won handily in Boundary Similkameen over the NDP's Sam Hancheroff... and Jackie Tagert upset NDP incumbant Harry Lali in Fraser Nicola.

The Liberals are leading or elected in 51 ridings, with the NDP leading or elected in 32.

One Green candidate and one independant are also headed to Victoria.

Liberal Linda Larsen has been declared the winner in the Boundary Similkameen Riding, while Liberal Jackie Taggert has defeated incumbant NDP MLA Harry Lali in Fraser Nicola... Dan Ashton holds onto a small lead in Penticton.
