A large fissure and even larger rock has some locals in the Twin Lakes area worried for their safety.

A bed and breakfast operator raised the concerns last week and since then the Ministry of Transportation has stepped in to assess the situation.

Murray Tekano with the Ministry says ground and air crews investigated the site because it is adjacent to a public road.

"It appears to us, to our Geo-technical engineers that the majority of the movement has happened. And it's probably going to sit there with the chance of some rocks spalling off, coming loose and maybe coming down the slope. But we don't envision that to be an imminent risk to the public."

Tekano says it is unlikely the fissure is related to the Kaleden Acres development which is happening in the area, but it's up to the land owner to take action to protect the public.

"There's rock falling potentially and in some cases some small rocks have already fallen from that slope from where the rock has sloughed onto the slopes leading down to the public road. And there's a chance that some of those rocks over the winter might come down and land on the road."

Tekano says engineers have determined that the boulder does not pose a threat to the B&B located below the site.
