Independent Investigations Office in Penticton
9/27/2012
The newly formed Independent Investigation Office (IIO) has arrived in Penticton to investigate a police involved incident.
The IIO say Penticton RCMP officers responded to a call about a woman threatening to jump off her balcony on Friday.
Sgt Rick Deleburr of the Penticton RCMP says the woman was already about to jump when police arrived.
"While we were trying to get into the building she basically jumps off the balcony"
Deleburr says the IIO team was notified of the incident four days later.
This is the second time the team has been dispatched to investigate an officer involved incident in the province.
Once the investigation is completed the Chief Civilian Director will determine if he believes an offence may have taken place, if he does he will refer the case to Crown Council.
If the case is not referred the Director will release a public report relating to the investigation and his findings.
The woman is being treated in hospital in the Lower Mainland as she broke both her legs and her pelvis as a result of the fall.
